Self-Care in Winter: Nurturing Your Mind and Afro Hair.

Written by Taofeekat Oladipo | November 20, 2024

As the days become shorter and the air turns crisp, winter gently ushers in a season of change. While we've experienced many winters before, each one brings its own set of challenges that can affect our minds, bodies, and even the health of our hair. For those with textured and coily hair, the cold weather can exacerbate dryness, making it especially important to give your hair extra care and attention. Simultaneously, many people notice shifts in their mood and emotions during the winter months.

But winter doesn't have to be a time of discomfort. With a thoughtful self-care regimen that addresses both your mental well-being and hair needs, you can embrace the season with confidence and joy.

Ready to prioritise your overall well-being this winter? Read on as we offer tips on caring for your mental health and nurturing your hair throughout the season.

How Does Winter Affect Mental Health?

According to the Action Mental Health Organisation UK, Google searches for “seasonal affective disorder” peak over 500% during winter. While many people look forward to the cosy nights and slaying winter fashion collections, others cannot wait for the colder season to pass quickly.

Several scientific research and the NHS have asserted that winter can trigger a type of depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The major cause of this depression is the decrease in sunlight during the winter months. Our bodies get most of the Vitamin D from the sun which helps create serotonin, a chemical that regulates our mood, anxiety & happiness. Other studies show that a decrease in the Vitamin D level alters melatonin, a hormone responsible for the normal sleep-wake cycle.

A decrease in the sunlight time during winter leads to:

  • Sluggishness and low mood level
  • Decrease in exercise which adversely affects mood
  • Financial concerns because of financial winter commitments coupled with the festive.
  • Loneliness due to an increase in indoor time

Is Cold Weather Bad for Afro Hair?

Afro-textured hair is delicate and naturally prone to dryness, but the winter season can worsen this issue due to colder air outside and the heat turned on indoors – both constantly drying out the hair leading to breakage, frizz, tangles, and split ends. As a result of these, your Afro-hair requires extra attention and TLC during this period.

But do not let the thought of managing mental health and hair care overwhelm you. We have compiled self-care tips that intertwine both, turning your hair care routine into a soothing ritual that nurtures your well-being from root to soul.

Hair Care Tips as Self-Care

1. Hydrate Your Hair

Winter's dry air can strip moisture from your hair, so hydration is key to keeping healthy Afro-textured hair

  • Deep Condition Weekly: Use a hydrating conditioner to help keep moisture in your curls.
  • Moisturise Regularly: Apply a leave-in conditioner or moisturiser to soften, strengthen, and lock in oils.
  • Avoid Over-Washing: Washing too often can remove natural oils. Prioritise your wash days but be cautious not to overdo it.

2. Choose Protective Styles & Wears

Protect your hair from harsh weather with protective styles and headwear that minimise breakage and shedding. Kam Davis, the founder of Nylah, while speaking with Metro Lifestyle highlighted the use of silk scarves under winter hats.

  • Braids and Twists: These styles protect your hair by locking in moisture and safeguarding the ends. Remember to moisturise your roots periodically.
  • Buns and Updos: Low-maintenance and easy to do at home, just ensure your hairband is not too tight to avoid scalp tension.
  • Extensions and Wigs: A wonderful way to switch up your look while protecting your natural hair. Always keep your hair hydrated underneath.
  • Silk Scarf or Bonnet: Silk is a great accessory for Afro hair as it does not absorb moisture and prevents breakage and frizz. Wear a silk scarf under your hats and a silk bonnet to bed to prevent hair breakage.

3. Relax with Scalp Massages

Scalp massages are not just an activity; they are beneficial for your mental well-being. Research has shown that scalp massage promotes blood circulation results in the relaxation of blood vessels and positive effect on neck muscles which reduces stress and anxiety.

  • Increase Blood Flow: Massaging your scalp releases tension and promotes circulation.
  • Stress & Anxiety Reduction: Scalp massage takes off stress and eases your tension.
How to do a head massage

The beautiful thing about this massage is you can do it alone all by yourself. All you need is your fingertips—massage oil is optional!

  1. Set a relaxing atmosphere— put on comfortable clothes and tune in soothing music.
  2. Gently massage your scalp in circular motions. If you are using oil, dip your fingertips in the oil jar and continue.
  3. Apply light to medium pressure during massaging.
  4. Massage for a minimum of 5 minutes.
  5. Rinse out the oil with shampoo when done.

Prioritising Your Mental Health

Integrating hair care into your self-care routine can have a positive impact on your mental health during winter.

Create a Weekly Ritual

  • Set Aside Time: Dedicate a specific time each week for your hair care.
  • Enhance the Experience: Light candles, play calming music or use aromatic diffusers to make it a holistic experience.

Practice Mindful Detangling

  • Be Present: Focus on the process of detangling your hair, turning it into a meditative practice that clears your mind.

Stay Active and Connected

  • Physical Activity: Incorporate regular exercise to boost your mood.
  • Social Engagement: Stay connected with friends and family to combat feelings of isolation.

Seek Professional Help if Needed

  • Consult a therapist: If you find winter particularly challenging, don't hesitate to seek professional support.

As we embrace the coldest months of the year, remember that caring for your Afro-textured hair can be a powerful act of self-love. By nurturing your hair, you are also taking time to unwind and treat your mind, body, and spirit with kindness. Let this winter be a season of holistic well-being, where self-care rituals leave you feeling rejuvenated and empowered.
